On August 16, 2019, Tharaka-Nithi Governor Muthomi Njuki spoke out against the Punguza Mizigo Bill in Mukothima ward, Tharaka constituency.

According to Governor Njuki, the bill, if passed, would risk merging Tharaka-Nithi County with Meru County, reducing wards and constituencies in the process.

"There is likelihood of locking yourselves outside because if this bill goes through, Tharaka-Nithi County risks being merged with Meru County and wards and constituencies will be reduced," said Mr Njuki.

However, the MCAs, led by Majority Leader Godfrey Murithi, remain committed to endorsing the bill, citing its potential to strengthen devolution and spur economic growth.

"We are ready to support Punguza Mizigo Initiative Bill because it seeks to reduce the burden on Kenyans and to promote devolution," said Mr Murithi.
