On August 16, 2019, the Alliance for Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) welcomed its new chair, former Ethiopian Prime Minister Haile Mariam Desalegn, who succeeds outgoing chair Strive Masiyiwa.
Speaking at a press briefing in Nairobi, Desalegn outlined his key agenda as the new chair, which includes catalysing and sustaining inclusive agriculture transformation in Africa by increasing incomes and improving food security for millions of households.
"I am thankful that I succeed Mr. Masiyiwa, a remarkable leader who leaves behind a solid organisation and an impressive track record," said Desalegn. "I remain certain of his support in the journey to achieving green revolution in the continent."
Desalegn emphasized the importance of engaging the youth in driving the green revolution, stating that having 40 percent of young people in agriculture is not enough, and that technologically smart agriculture is needed.
AGRA president Agnes Kalibata welcomed the new chairman and thanked the outgoing chair for his contribution to the organisation's success, adding that under his leadership, they reached critical milestones in the aim to transform Africa's agriculture.
Desalegn officially starts his reign as chairman in September 2019, with a deadline of 2025 to achieve the green revolution in Africa.
