DP Ruto Criticizes BBI, Says it's a Burden to Kenyans

Deputy President William Ruto has criticized the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) saying it's a burden to Kenyans. Ruto made the remarks during a series of rallies in Meru on August 17, 2019.

Speaking at the Kanisa la Mikinduri EAPC in Tigania East and at the Taasisi ya Kiufundi ya Karumo in Tigania West during a fundraising event for politician Jim Muchui, Ruto said that making changes to the Constitution is a waste of time.

"Making changes to the Constitution is a waste of time," Ruto said.

During the rallies, Ruto was accompanied by several leaders who expressed their support for him and vowed not to accept the new Constitution.

"We will not allow ourselves to be burdened by the new Constitution. We have our own goals and we will not be swayed," said Charity Kathambi, a senator from Njoro.

Other leaders who attended the rallies included Seneta wa Meru Mithika Linturi, wabunge Gitonga Murugara (Tharaka), John Mutunga (Tigania West), Gichunge Kabeabea (Tigania East), and Kathambi.

According to TUKO.co.ke, other leaders who attended the rallies included Kubai Kiringo (Igembe Central), Halima Mucheke, Kathuri Murungi, and Mugambi Rindikiri.

"We will not allow ourselves to be burdened by the new Constitution. We have our own goals and we will not be swayed," Kathambi said.

On the other hand, Kabebea said that the proposals in the BBI are a burden that will increase the tax burden on Kenyans.

"The proposals in the BBI are a burden that will increase the tax burden on Kenyans," Kabebea said.

During the rallies, Ruto also warned leaders who are calling for a referendum saying it's disturbing to Kenyans.

"I am the Deputy President of this country and I have been working since I was born to help President Kenyatta," Ruto said.
