On August 17, 2019, the Kenya Lionesses suffered a crushing defeat at the hands of South Africa, who were crowned the new champions of the 2019 Rugby Africa Women's Cup.

The match, played at the Bosman Stadium in Johannesburg, saw South Africa score seven tries, with Zintle Mpupha, Lindelwa Gwala, Tayla Kinsey, Rights Mkhari, Mathrin Simmers, Aseza Hele, and Snenhlanha Shozi all getting on the scoresheet. Kinsey added two conversions.

As a result of this loss, the Kenya Lionesses will now feature in a play-off match against a selected team from South America, with the winner competing in a 4-team global repechage tournament in 2020.

Kenya had reached the finals after whitewashing Madagascar and Uganda 35-5 and 37-5 respectively, while South Africa outshone Uganda 89-5 and Madagascar 73.
