Published on August 17, 2019, a group of Isiolo leaders have expressed support for the Punguza Mizigo proposed constitutional changes.
County Woman Representative Rehema Jaldesa and Isiolo Interfaith Council chairperson Ahmed Sett led the backing of the proposed changes, which include reducing the number of elected leaders to save funds for development.
According to Mr. Sett, reducing the number of elected leaders will enable the government to save funds that can be used to address challenges facing the country, such as hunger.
Ms. Jaldesa supported the creation of a ward development fund and increased budgetary allocations to counties, arguing that this will make devolution felt at the grassroots.
She also expressed support for the proposal to scrap the woman representative seat, citing the potential savings that could be used to improve the lives of Kenyans.
However, Ms. Jaldesa took issue with a clause that seeks to abolish the 290 constituencies and instead have the 47 counties turned into constituencies, arguing that this will affect devolution and marginalised areas.
Isiolo North MP Hassan Odha countered that the seats should instead be increased to ensure enough representation in the devolved units.
