On August 17, 2019, a tragic incident occurred in Baringo County when a stray elephant attacked and killed Jackson Cherutich Chepyegon, a primary school teacher.
During the funeral, area MP William Cheptumo demanded that the government compensate the aggrieved family, citing that the Kenya Wildlife Service owes up to Ksh. 30 million in compensation to victims of similar cases.
Other leaders present at the burial echoed his sentiments, lamenting over the increased incidents of human-wildlife conflict in the area.
Just last month, a 19-year-old boy was left fighting for his life at the Eldama Ravine Referral Hospital in Baringo after he was attacked by elephants.
Similar cases have been reported in other parts of the country, including Meru where a 43-year-old man narrowly escaped death after being attacked by three elephants.
