On Friday, six Kenyan fishermen from Remba Island in Suba North constituency were arrested and their boats confiscated by Ugandan authorities for allegedly trespassing into Ugandan territory on Lake Victoria.

According to Remba Island Beach Management Unit Network chairman Semekiah Okoth Mamra, the fishermen were arrested while on a fishing expedition around 6:30 p.m. and taken to Hama Island in Uganda where they are being detained.

Ugandan security personnel also confiscated the fishermen's two fishing boats, fishing gears, and their catch of unknown value, said Mamra in a phone interview with Citizen Digital.

Earlier this week, a group of Kenyan MPs from the region, led by Suba North lawmaker Millie Odhiambo and her Bondo counterpart Gideon Ochanda, urged Interior CS Fred Matiang'i to enforce laws that protect fishermen.
