On August 17, 2019, Cabinet Secretary for Sports Ambassador Amina Mohammed issued a stern warning to Kenyan athletes regarding the use of banned substances.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of the 40th edition of the KECOSO Games at the Gusii stadium in Kisii County, Ambassador Mohammed stated that athletes found to have used banned substances will not be allowed to compete again for the country in any local or international event.
She emphasized that the punishment will not only extend to the athletes but also to all persons involved, including managers, trainers, and agents.
The warning comes as Kenya has been grappling with a doping menace in the athletics world, with several athletes found to have used energy-enhancing drugs before competing in international events.
As a result, the country has established a local anti-doping agency to test athletes before competing at any event.
Ambassador Mohammed warned that athletes who test positive in doping tests will be handed lifetime bans, never to fly the country's flag again.
The Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) was one of the 13 teams that participated in this year's KECOSO Games.
KBC's managing director, Naim Bilal, pledged his full support to the KBC team, stating that the corporation will continue to participate in the games every year.
