On August 17, 2019, police in Mombasa County made a significant breakthrough in the investigation of the theft of 5,000 bags of sugar suspected to contain mercury from the Bollore godown in Changamwe.

According to reports, officers in Jomvu Sub-county confiscated the sugar from a house in the Bangladesh slum in Changamwe, where it was being stored.

The operation, which began on Saturday morning, led to the arrest of the owner of the house, a woman, who is being questioned in connection with the theft.

A senior detective, who wished to remain anonymous, praised the Bangladesh community for their assistance in recovering the stolen goods, saying, "The Bangladesh community helped us recover the goods."

While the investigation is ongoing, police have recovered some of the stolen sugar, with 300 bags of "good" sugar also stolen from the godown last week.

Seven people were arrested in connection with the theft of the 300 bags, and police are still looking for the watchman who escaped during the theft.
