On August 17, 2019, the management of Weekly Citizen newspaper sounded the alarm over a fake Facebook account causing confusion among their readers.

The fake account, 'Citizen Weekly', has been operating outside the bounds of intellectual property right law, masquerading as the genuine Weekly Citizen Facebook page.

According to the newspaper, the fake account has been posting articles in total disregard to ethics, lifting stories word for word from Weekly Citizen's original content.

Plagiarism is a serious crime, and those behind the fake account have been warned of dire legal ramifications in the newspaper's efforts to protect their integrity.

Most recently, the fake account depicted Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko and DCI boss Kinoti as orchestrators of corruption at the County government.

Weekly Citizen Newspaper has distanced themselves from the said publications and urges anyone with information regarding the identity of those behind the fake Facebook account to report to them or the nearest police station for further action.

The newspaper has reported the matter to relevant authorities, including the cyber-crime unit, to take action against the criminal gangs operating the fake page.
