On August 17, 2019, a tragic incident occurred at Moiben Police Station in Uasin Gishu County, where a 35-year-old police officer, Jairus Kiprotich, shot himself dead.

According to reports, Kiprotich had returned to work just four days prior, after spending several weeks at his home in Iten following the death of his wife.

Moiben Police Commander Jamleck Ngaruiya stated that Kiprotich was manning the reports desk when he shot himself in the mouth at approximately 6:30 am.

Officer Kiprotich had been moved from the Administration Police service to the Kenya Police during recent changes at the National Police Service.

Commander Ngaruiya noted that the police were unable to immediately determine the reason behind the officer's actions, but mentioned that Kiprotich's wife had passed away recently and that they were yet to establish whether he was experiencing depression following the loss.
