This archive report was first published on 17 August 2019.

On June 6, 2018, Irene Mumbi, then 17, risked her life to save her mother and six-year-old sibling from a burning house in Majengo slums, Nyeri. Her bravery came at a great cost, leaving her with severe burns that would change her life forever.

After three months of treatment at various hospitals in Nyeri, Mumbi's condition worsened, and she sank into depression. Her wounds were infected, and she was on the verge of losing hope.

However, her story was highlighted in a special feature by the Nation in October 2018, and well-wishers started flocking to her aid. During the Madaraka Day celebrations in Nyeri on October 20, 2018, she was recognized as a heroine for her daring rescue mission.

Thanks to the support of well-wishers, including social media influencer Samuel Gateri, who mobilized youths in Nyeri and Embu counties to raise funds for her treatment, Mumbi was transferred to Tenri Embu Children's Hospital, where she received treatment for eight months.

Her journey to recovery was not without its challenges. The first skin grafting was unsuccessful, and she had to undergo a second procedure. However, with the help of her doctors and nurses, Mumbi's wounds began to heal, and she started to regain her strength.

Today, Mumbi is a testament to the power of resilience and determination. Despite the scars that remain, she is proud of her bravery and hopes to become a nurse to help others who have gone through similar experiences.
