On a day that saw the 2019 East Africa Secondary School Games kick off at the Sheikh Amri Abeid Memorial Stadium, St Anthony's Boys Kitale made a statement with a 4-0 thrashing of Lindi Secondary School in their opening match.

St Anthony's, the 2002 champions, were back in the regional games after missing out on last year's tourney in Musanze, Rwanda. The team's impressive performance was led by skipper Tyson Kapchanga, who scored a hat-trick, and Daniel Odhiambo, who added a further strike.

Despite missing a second-half penalty, Odhiambo's effort came off the crossbar, and the team's coach, Peter Mayoyo, praised his charges for the impressive start, but admitted they can still get better.

"We should have had more goals because we controlled the game from the onset, but our best is yet to come and we are looking forward to our next match," Mayoyo said.

The win puts St Anthony's at the top of pool 'A' ahead of their second clash against reigning champions Buddo Secondary School on Monday.
