On February 11, 2018, a woman, who was a local musician, was raped by two former Kenyan international rugby players, Alex Olaba and Frank Wanyama, at Seefa apartments in Highrise, Nairobi.
The incident occurred on the woman's birthday, which she had spent attending a party in Kilimani where the two rugby players were present.
According to the woman's statement to the police, she went home with the two players after a night of merry-making, and it was then that they took advantage of her inebriated state and raped her repeatedly, refusing to take no for an answer.
Olaba and Wanyama maintained in their statements that sexual contact was consensual.
On August 8, 2019, a Nairobi court delivered a verdict finding the two rugby players guilty of gang rape charges.
Magistrate Martha Mutuku handed down the sentence of 15 years in prison to each of the players, stating that the victim was traumatised by the event and a deterrent sentence was necessary.
