On August 16, 2019, officials from the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT), led by Wilson Sossion, were locked out of a conference on the new Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) at the KICC in Nairobi.
The conference was led by President Uhuru Kenyatta, who discussed the new CBC that will be implemented in primary schools.
Some KNUT officials claimed that they were required to obtain clearance from the Ministry of Interior to attend the conference.
"We were told to obtain clearance from the Ministry of Interior," a KNUT official told the Daily Nation.
KNUT, led by Sossion, has been at the forefront of opposing the implementation of the CBC, citing that teachers are not ready to teach it.
The government was also expected to make a statement on whether primary school students will be required to take a national exam.
Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha asked the Kenya National Examinations Council (Knec) to provide more information on how students will take their exams.
"How will we tell parents that it's not an exam?" Magoha asked.
Magoha has been at odds with Sossion over the implementation of the CBC.
Magoha stated that the CBC must be implemented by those who are ready, and those who are not must step aside.
