On August 16, 2019, West Pokot Governor John Lonyangapuo visited Natekol village in Uganda, where he met with Kacheliba MP Mark Lomunokol to discuss the importance of including migratory pastoralists in the census.
Lonyangapuo emphasized that the pastoral community members are migratory and should be reached by the enumerators. He proposed organizing herders in shifts to ensure everyone takes part in the exercise.
The governor noted that the census is crucial because the Commission on Revenue Allocation (CRA) uses population as a factor in determining fund allocations. "If everyone is counted, we will get our rightful share in the revenue allocations," he said.
Meanwhile, in Trans Nzoia County, bar operators have been directed to close their businesses on August 24 and 25 to allow residents to participate in the census. County Commissioner Samson Ojwang' explained that the move is aimed at ensuring all residents are at home during the counting process.
Ojwang' also urged residents to provide accurate information to the enumerators, stating that misleading data will affect strategic planning for socio-economic development. He assured residents of tight security during the counting process.
