On August 14, 2019, Liverpool secured the Uefa Super Cup title by defeating Chelsea 5-4 in a penalty shootout, following a 2-2 draw in Istanbul.
However, the celebrations were marred by an unfortunate incident involving Liverpool goalkeeper Adrian, who was injured by a pitch invader.
According to Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, a fan ran onto the pitch, slipped, and kicked Adrian's ankle, causing the injury.
"I really don't understand it why, in the world of social media where you are all on it, when we were all together a supporter jumped over something, was chased by some security guys, slipped and kicked (Adrian's) ankle. Crazy," Klopp said.
Adrian's ankle was swollen the day after the incident, but he reported improvement by the time Klopp spoke to him. However, the final decision on Adrian's fitness for the upcoming match against Southampton will be made the next day.
With Liverpool's normal number one goalkeeper Alisson Becker already out due to a calf injury, the team may have to cope without him for up to two months.
Should Adrian not be fit, 35-year-old Andy Lonergan, who was released by Middlesbrough last season and signed a short-term contract with Liverpool this week, could start at St. Mary's.
