On August 16, 2019, a Kenyan court handed down a 15-year prison sentence to two professional rugby players, Victor Wanyama and Dennis Mahaga, for their alleged roles in drugging and assaulting a musician.

The musician, who was pregnant at the time, claimed that she was attacked by the duo after she went to one of their houses following her birthday celebration. She alleged that she was drugged before the ordeal and that she was helpless against the two men, who were stronger due to their rugby training.

According to her police statement, the musician tried to confront Wanyama with the allegations but he dismissed her, telling her to look for a lawyer if she decided to go public.

Wanyama, however, denied the charges, accusing the musician of attempting to extort money from him. He and Mahaga were initially freed on bond and a Sh500,000 bail each, but were later sentenced to 15 years in prison.
