On August 16, 2019, the High Court in Nairobi made a ruling on a petition to stop Moi University's graduation ceremony, scheduled for August 22, 2019.

Justice John Mativo declined the petition and instead directed that the petition be heard inter-party next week, with a ruling to be delivered on the same day on whether 14 students whose names were missing from the graduation list would graduate or not.

The students, who were over 500 in number, had moved to court to temporarily stop the ceremony, blaming the university for the hitch.

They claimed that some lecturers had willingly failed to release marks to quietly push for their pay and allowances, with the most affected faculty being the School of Business and Economics.

According to reports, close to 500 students at the faculty had to contribute individually to one of their lecturers for their marks to be released.

However, the university management disputed the students' claims, stating that many of the aggrieved students had huge fee balances and missing marks.

Patricia Cherambos, Moi University's Public Relations Officer, said it was too late for the students to be listed for graduation.
