On August 14, 2019, the Ministry of Education hosted a conference to discuss the country's education reforms, including the implementation of the new competence-based curriculum (CBC). The conference brought together over 2,000 delegates from across the country and international organizations.

However, the conference took a dramatic turn when KNUT officials, led by Secretary-General Wilson Sossion, were asked to leave. The move was reportedly due to KNUT's opposition to the implementation of the new CBC, citing teacher unpreparedness and inadequate infrastructure to support it.

During the pre-conference, Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha directed the Kenya National Examinations Council (Knec) to clear up confusion surrounding the Kenya Early Years Assessment (Keya) for Grade Three learners. Magoha posed the question, 'How do we package this assessment for parents to understand that it is not an exam?'
