On August 16, 2019, a Kenyan musician took to social media to share her harrowing experience of being allegedly drugged and raped by two rugby players, Victor Wanyama and Dennis Mahaga.
According to her police statement, the musician claimed that she was attacked after visiting one of the players' homes following her birthday celebration. She alleged that she was in a state of shock, denial, and exhaustion, which prevented her from reporting the incident to the police immediately.
Wanyama denied the allegations, accusing the musician of attempting to extort money from him. The two players were later freed on a Sh500,000 bail each and a bond after denying the charges in court.
Their lawyers argued that the players were contracted by the national rugby team and had undergone DNA tests, making them unlikely to flee the country.
