On August 16, 2019, detectives in Kayole, Nairobi, conducted a sting operation that led to the confiscation of 446 bags of counterfeit sugar worth KSH 5 million.
The operation, which was carried out in collaboration with officials from the Anti-Counterfeit Authority (ACA), resulted in the arrest of five suspects who were found repackaging the sugar in 50-kilogram bags and selling it at Green Ventures stores in Kayole.
According to the ACA official, the sugar was believed to be from the Western Region and was indicated as 'not for sale.' The suspects, who include Hassan Ibrahim, Geoffrey Mutua, Moses Murigi Irungu, Elkana Waro Omache, and Nancy Wanja Kitonga, were found repackaging the sugar labeled as 'not for sale' and suspected to belong to the World Food Programme.
As part of the investigation, detectives took samples of the sugar to the government chemist for analysis to determine whether it is fit for human consumption.
The five suspects are currently in police custody awaiting arraignment after police complete their investigations.
