On August 16, 2019, a multi-agency operation led by the Anti-Counterfeit Authority resulted in the seizure of 450 bags of counterfeit sugar worth Ksh5M from Ventures Green Stores in Chokaa area, Kayole, Nairobi.

The operation, which involved Kenya police based in Kayole, also led to the arrest of five suspects who were found repackaging the counterfeit sugar.

The sugar, labelled 'Not For Sale', was suspected to belong to the World Food Programme based on the samples collected.

Repackaging of sugar into local trademarks is considered an offence under the Anti-Counterfeit Act, as it amounts to counterfeiting.

The suspects, who include Hassan Ibrahim, Geoffrey Mutua, Moses Murigi Irungu, Elkana Waro Omache, and Nancy Wanja Kitonga, are expected to be charged under several counts of the Anti-Counterfeit Act and other laws of Kenya after final investigations.

Members of the public are advised to report any suspicious dealings in trade to the authorities, as counterfeit trade affects the health and safety of Kenyans and kills local industries.
