On August 16, 2019, Makueni Governor Kivutha Kibwana issued a surprise warning to leaders who underestimate Deputy President William Ruto's chances in the 2022 election.

Speaking at the fifth Annual Tobong'ulore Festival in Turkana, attended by many leaders including the DP, Governor Kibwana emphasized the importance of respecting Ruto's capabilities.

"Those who take you for granted and think that you do not matter are very wrong. Yes, they are very wrong and I can say that boldly because I am a constitutional political analyst and a politician for that matter. I know your capability," he remarked.

Notably, Governor Kibwana also declared his interest in the presidency, stating that he would be on the ballot in the 2022 election.

According to the governor, he made the decision after being approached by people who asked him to join the race, despite earlier mentioning that he would retire from politics after his term ends to spend time with family and his grandchildren.
