Published on August 16, 2019, a question from a concerned employee sparked a thought-provoking discussion on overcoming workplace frustration and self-improvement.

When an employee feels undervalued and underutilized, it's natural to wonder if a change in leadership could be the solution. However, before seeking a promotion, it's essential to examine one's own performance and the dynamics at play in the workplace.

Key questions to consider include: How have your colleagues' performances been rated relative to yours in the past two years? Has your organization met its objectives during the same period? How is your role viewed in the organization? What informs the opinion that your colleagues are lazy? Are you satisfied with the rating that your boss has assigned your performance in the last two years?

It's also crucial to assess your supervisor's leadership style and its impact on the team. What shortcomings, in your view, hamper your supervisor's ability to be a good boss? Do you view your supervisor the same way you do her peers? Do your other colleagues share your views concerning your boss?

Instead of privately seething in anger and dissatisfaction, consider speaking to your supervisor about how your role could be modified. If you doubt that she will take your views seriously, seek audience with her boss, or share your concerns with HR. Remember that your colleagues and your boss also have their views about you and your performance.

As Fred Gituku, a Human Resources Practitioner, so aptly puts it, “If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.” This wisdom is particularly relevant when navigating workplace challenges and seeking personal growth.
