On Saturday, a wedding at Post Bank Grounds on Kiambu Road in Nairobi took a devastating turn as more than 40 guests fell ill and one person died from food poisoning and cholera.

According to reports, at least 10 guests and family members are currently admitted in various hospitals in Nairobi after testing positive for cholera. As of Wednesday, three were admitted at Mater Hospital, three at Mama Lucy Hospital, and four at the Kenyatta National Hospital.

The newlyweds, Wilson Wamunyu and his bride Sarah, survived the scare and flew to Dubai for their honeymoon immediately after the wedding.

However, the family's joy was short-lived as the groom's brother, Samson Mathu, revealed that their 89-year-old grandfather, Wamunyu Wilson, died on Tuesday at Mt Kenya Hospital.

The food for the wedding, which catered to 450 guests, was supplied by Hot Dishes, a Nairobi-based restaurant with outdoor catering services. The total cost of the food was Sh184,000.

Hot Dishes Director Salome Mwangi was unavailable to comment as she was attending the burial of a staff member.

Nairobi county director of Health Lucina Koyio has warned city dwellers to remain on high alert for cholera outbreaks, citing a wave of cholera outbreak confirmed on March 20.
