French Woman Fined Sh1 Million for Ivory Bangle at JKIA

On August 15, 2019, Laazibi Amal, a French national, was arrested at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in Nairobi for being in possession of an ivory bangle.

Amal was transiting through JKIA from France to Dzaoudzi Island when she was arrested with an ivory bangle weighing 0.85 grams.

She was booked at the JKIA Police Station before being arraigned in court the following day.

Ms Amal pleaded guilty and was fined Sh1 million or a 12-month jail term in default.

The court allowed her to access the bank at the airport to pay the fine or surrender to the court and hand over her passport.
