Published on August 16, 2019, the betting industry in Kenya has grown exponentially over the past five years, attracting over 300 betting entities.
However, this growth has come at a cost, with many Kenyans falling victim to betting addiction, leading to broken homes, idleness, and irresponsible financial decisions.
Unlike their UK counterparts, local betting companies have failed to promote responsible gaming practices, instead resorting to enticing advertisements that glorify betting as a gateway to wealth.
These advertisements often feature jackpot winners and overnight celebrities, who are paraded as role models to motivate the masses to try their luck.
However, many of these winners forget to mention the losses they have incurred, and are encouraged to try their luck again, perpetuating a cycle of addiction and financial ruin.
Furthermore, the amounts pumped into corporate social investment projects by betting companies are peanuts compared to what they make from poor Kenyans.
It is time for betting firms to take responsibility for their actions and promote responsible gaming practices, rather than exploiting the vulnerabilities of Kenyans for their own gain.
