On August 15, 2019, a dramatic scene unfolded at the Kibra Law Courts in Nairobi, where seven suspects were brought to face drunk and disorderly charges.
However, the suspects were in a state of extreme intoxication, with some even blacking out on the ground. Two police officers struggled to pick them up one by one, highlighting the severity of their condition.
Senior Principal Magistrate Esther Bokhe was forced to defer the hearing of the charges, citing the suspects' inability to stand or speak. The court was left with no choice but to adjourn the case.
The suspects were among over 200 people arrested in a police operation in Huruma area. Despite being in police custody for more than six hours, the suspects remained highly intoxicated, leaving officers baffled.
As a result, an operation is expected to be conducted in the areas of Huruma suspected to be the origin of the illicit substance consumed by the suspects.
The Kenya Prisons Service (KPS) clarified that the suspects were not in their custody, contradicting earlier reports.
