On August 15, 2019, a version of David Mulwa's 1989 play 'Redemption' was staged at the Kenya Cultural Centre by Kenyatta University students under the direction of Emmanuel Shikuku.

The play, which was considered radical at the time, exposed corruption, contradictions, and petty conflicts within the church. Although the institution's social role has diminished since its premiere, the story remains beautifully crafted.

The play revolves around three church leaders: Mark Maina, a traditional 'fire-and-brimstone' model; Martin, a younger, more empathetic leader; and Archbishop Muthemba, a cunning conman who built his church with foreign funding and deceit.

The story follows the relationships between the characters, including the Romeo-Juliet styled courting between Rebecca and her lover, which is soured by the Archbishop's son taking advantage of the innocent Rebecca.

As the story unfolds, the Archbishop's deceit is exposed, and he is eventually caught for larceny. The play ends on a hopeful note, with the characters finding redemption and a chance for a brighter future.

While the play was well-received, there were some flaws in its execution, including a lengthy runtime and some melodramatic scenes.
