On August 15, 2019, Kenya's tea prices at the Mombasa auction experienced a slight increase due to improved demand.
The overall price, including regional teas, rose from Sh182 to Sh191 per kilo, marking a significant improvement from the previous week.
Local tea prices also saw a notable increase, averaging Sh210 per kilo, up from Sh200 the previous week.
According to Peter Kimanga, director at the Global Tea Commodity, Kenya's tea received more bidders during the auction.
"Our tea was in high demand during the sale and this is the reason why the prices went up compared with the previous sale," said Mr. Kimanga.
Notably, Rwanda's tea remained the most valued at the auction, attracting Sh277 per kilo this week, up from Sh272 last week.
Historically, tea prices have been low due to a surplus of supply over demand. However, this recent increase suggests a shift in market dynamics.
