On August 15, 2019, a Mombasa businessman Ali Punjani's wife and associates were released from police custody after the court found there was lack of evidence against them.
Ali Punjani, a businessman from Mombasa, is alleged to be involved in a counterfeit cigarette business. His wife, a 24-year-old woman from Nepal, was among those arrested during a raid at their home.
The police had accused the trio of obstructing police officers who were conducting a search at the businessman's home. However, the court found that the police had failed to provide sufficient evidence to support their claims.
According to reports, the police had requested for a seven-day extension to complete their investigations, but the court denied their request and ordered the release of the trio after 24 hours.
It is alleged that the police had failed to gather sufficient evidence to support their claims, and as a result, the court had no choice but to release the trio.
Ali Punjani's wife and associates were among several people who were arrested during the raid. The police had accused them of obstructing their officers and providing false information.
