On August 15, 2019, Kenya Railways Corporation announced plans to add five passenger coaches to the Madaraka Express to meet the rising demand for the service.
The additional coaches will be introduced on the morning and afternoon return trips from Nairobi to Mombasa, Monday to Thursday.
Two months prior, the corporation had increased the number of coaches from 11 to 16 on weekends, with the train then pulling 11 coaches (118 passengers) on economy class tickets and two (72 passengers) on first-class tickets.
The move, aimed at increasing revenue, was announced by Kenya Railways managing director Atanas Maina.
