On August 7, 2019, security was heightened in Kabondo, Homa Bay County, following a confrontation between GSU officers and a crowd of youths mobilized by angry elders.

The Luo Council of Elders had summoned Monica, the widow of Kibra MP Ken Okoth, for traditional burial rituals in accordance with Luo culture.

According to Nahashon Kosewe, a representative of the Luo Council of Elders, 'We have a suitor and Monica must tell us the day she is ready for the obvious as per our culture. We are not going to beg for what is rightfully ours.'

The traditional burial rituals would include 'doing bad manners' with Monica, a longstanding Luo tradition that dictates a widow can be remarried by a brother of her late husband.
