UEFA Men's Player of the Year: Messi, Ronaldo, Van Dijk in Final Three ¶
On August 15, 2019, UEFA announced the final three nominees for the 2018-19 Men's Player of the Year award: Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Virgil van Dijk.
According to UEFA, the winner will be revealed on August 29, 2019, during the group stage draw in Monaco, alongside the Women's Player of the Year and Champions League positional award winners.
Each of the three finalists has had an impressive season. Lionel Messi claimed both the top goalscorer in the Champions League and the European Golden Shoe, while also winning his tenth La Liga title with Barcelona. Cristiano Ronaldo emerged as the UEFA Nations League winner with Portugal and the top goalscorer prize, and also scooped his first Serie A silverware in his debut campaign with Juventus. Virgil van Dijk won the Champions League man of the match for Liverpool last season and reached the UEFA Nations League final with Holland.
