On August 15, 2019, Embu County Speaker Philip Nzangi found himself in a difficult situation as he tried to calm down male MCAs who were upset over a female colleague's dress code.
Nominated MCA Lorna Kariuki had made a joke about being 'as short as a mini skirt' to avoid wasting time, but her comment sparked a heated debate among the male representatives.
Ngari Mbaka, a lawmaker from Mavuria, asked the Speaker to protect them from what he called the 'torture' of seeing Lorna's dress, saying it was 'extremely short' and 'grossly underdressed'.
However, Lorna defended her dress code, accusing her male counterparts of focusing on trivial issues instead of contributing to the debates.
The Speaker used the opportunity to appeal to all county members to read through the Standing Orders on appropriate dress code.
