On August 15, 2019, a disturbing incident unfolded in Ol Kalou town, where a one-week-old baby girl was discovered in a pit latrine.
The mother of the baby, 16-year-old Eunice Wambui Mwangi from Ndunyu Njeru in North Kinangop, was arrested on Tuesday evening after she accompanied her mother to the Ol Kalou police station.
According to Jane Gathoni, 51, Eunice's mother, she had visited her daughter in Ol Kalou on Sunday, where Eunice was working as a manual laborer. Gathoni stated that she had learned that her daughter was not feeling well and decided to return home with her to Ndunyu Njeru.
However, upon interrogating Eunice about her illness, Gathoni discovered that her daughter had given birth but could not explain the whereabouts of the infant.
On Monday and Tuesday, Gathoni heard the news of a baby girl being discovered in a pit latrine in Ol Kalou on the radio, but she did not get clear details.
"I decided to come to Ol Kalou to follow up on this matter. I went to Ol Kalou police station and also to JM Memorial hospital where the baby is kept," Gathoni said.
Eunice eventually confessed that the baby was hers, stating that she had dumped it in the pit latrine out of fear of her mother.
Ol Kalou police station is currently holding Eunice as police carry out further investigations to unravel the details of the crime.
