On August 15, 2019, the United States and United Kingdom embassies in Zimbabwe condemned a series of abductions of opposition activists.
The main opposition party, MDC, is preparing for protests on Friday against President Emmerson Mnangagwa, calling for a negotiated resolution to an election dispute.
According to civil society groups, six activists were abducted by armed men in the last few days, tortured, and dumped in various parts of the capital, Harare.
US Ambassador Brian Nichols visited some of the victims in hospitals, with the US embassy expressing concern over the renewed reports of abductions and assault of civil society members and opposition party members.
The British embassy urged the government to bring those behind the abductions to book, emphasizing the importance of upholding the constitution and ensuring freedom to peaceful demonstrations.
However, government spokesperson Nick Mangwana attributed the kidnappings to a 'third force,' comprised of discharged and disgruntled former members of the old establishment.
