On 26th July 2019, the government of Kenya invited prospective buyers to bid for the country's first crude oil export.

After a competitive tender process, ChemChina UK Limited emerged as the winner, beating seven other international firms representing European and Asian refineries.

According to the government, ChemChina UK Limited was selected following a competitive tender process, and the sale was completed at a cost of Ksh.1.2 billion for 200,000 barrels of crude oil.

President Uhuru Kenyatta announced the sale two weeks ago, stating that the government had started the journey of utilizing the country's resources for the benefit of its citizens.

The sale marks the completion of the first leg of Kenya's crude oil production prospects, which began in July 2018 when the first consignment of crude oil was flagged off from the Lokichar oil fields in Turkana County.

ChemChina UK Limited is expected to begin shipping out the crude oil from Mombasa next week.
