Maureen Wanjiku Mwihaki, a 22-year-old Chuka University student, was found dead under mysterious circumstances, prompting a murder investigation that has led to the arrest of four suspects.

On Thursday, Murang'a Resident Magistrate Sheila Nyaga ordered the suspects - Allan Muchangi, Joseph Weru Wairimu, Brenda Wanjiru, and Maureen Wambu - to be detained for two weeks to allow police to conclude their investigations.

The four suspects will be held at the Murang'a Police Station until August 28, 2019.

A post-mortem examination revealed that Ms Mwihaki was strangled to death, contradicting the suspects' initial claim that she died in hospital due to stomach complications.

Ms Mwihaki had attended a graduation party for her childhood friend at Murang'a University on Friday, but died the following Sunday morning.
