August 15, 2019, marked a significant shift in the fortunes of the National women's volleyball team, Malkia Strikers, as Paul Bitok took over as the head coach.
Bitok, a decorated and experienced coach, was appointed to steady the ship following the departure of Italian coach Shailene Ramdoo, whose contract 'expired' amidst souring relations with the technical bench and playing unit.
According to Bitok, everything is under control, and he has asked Kenyans not to worry. In an interview with Citizen Digital, Bitok revealed that he has been holding meetings with his charges to manage the situation before they head to Morocco to defend their All African Games title.
Bitok has implemented bonding sessions to make the girls gel on and off the pitch, emphasizing the importance of unity of purpose, teamwork, and cohesion. Before departing for Morocco, the team has engaged in activities such as lunch, swimming, and playing handball and netball together.
Kenya Volleyball Federation President Waithaka Kioni stated that the entire playing unit complained about Ramdoo's high-handedness, and after a meeting with them, he decided to take action, which he believes is the best for the team.
As the Malkia Strikers head to Morocco, they are set to renew their rivalry with African champions Cameroon in Group B, alongside Algeria and Senegal.
