On August 9, 2019, a Nairobi court granted the Director of Public Prosecutions permission to freeze the assets of billionaire Humphrey Kariuki, worth over Ksh41 billion, in a tax evasion case.
Kariuki, the owner of African Spirits Limited, an alcoholic beverage company, is accused of evading taxes to the tune of Ksh41 billion.
The freezing order, granted by Milimani Resident Magistrate Caroline Nzibe, includes Kariuki's ships, aeroplane, and other immovable property.
On August 15, 2019, Kariuki moved to court to have the freezing order lifted, citing that his beverages business would suffer.
Through his lawyer, Benjamin Musyoki, Kariuki argued that the freezing order may result in the shut-down, crippling, and even thwarting of his other business, Wow Beverages Limited.
The freezing order will remain active until Kariuki's case is heard and determined, the court said on August 9, 2019.
