At least 40 guests at a wedding in Nairobi fell ill with cholera, leaving one family member dead, after consuming food supplied by a local restaurant.
The wedding, which took place at Post Bank Grounds on Kiambu Road in Nairobi, was attended by 450 guests who were served a variety of dishes, including vegetable salad, mixed vegetables, and beef, at a cost of Sh184,000.
According to the groom's brother, Samson Mathu, their grandfather, Wamunyu Wilson, succumbed to cholera on Tuesday at 9:30 pm at Mt Kenya Hospital. He was 89 years old.
Mathu stated that they have written to the food supplier, Hot Dishes, to demand answers.
Hot Dishes Director Salome Mwangi was unavailable for comment as she was attending the burial of a staff member.
Earlier this year, Nairobi county director of health Lucina Koyio had warned of a cholera outbreak in the county, stating that all subcounties in Nairobi remained on high alert for cholera outbreaks.
Cholera is a deadly disease that can be transmitted when people ingest food or water contaminated with faecal matter containing cholera germs.
