Published on August 15, 2019, the regional bloc Igad has proposed August 21 for the two leaders to meet in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa.
The meeting comes after Igad noted that lack of consultations between the two leaders had been hindering the enactment of the peace pact brokered by the bloc in September 2018.
According to Igad, the meeting aims to facilitate consultations between the parties to the agreement in the presence of representatives of Igad member states.
However, South Sudan's Information Minister Michael Makuei Lueth has stated that President Kiir will not attend the meeting, citing that it does not require his attendance. Instead, Juba will send three representatives on his behalf.
Edmund Yakani, a South Sudanese activist, has expressed concerns that the lack of trust among the leaders could derail the peace implementation process.
