Published on August 15, 2019, Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko's daughter Saumu Mbuvi has shared her personal struggles with depression after a breakup with the father of her child, Ben Gatu.
At 21, Saumu entered her first relationship with 'a lot of naivety and expectations that it would lead to marriage.' However, the relationship left her on depression pills for a while.
She reflected on her experiences, saying, 'Let me use myself as an example, my first relationship I was only 21 young and naïve. Thinking the relationship would lead to marriage, it totally damaged me and left me on depression pills for a while. The same fear of being judged is what I had until I choose myself and my child's happiness over everything.'
After separating from Ben Gatu in 2017, Saumu accused him of using her for political mileage. She later started dating again, prioritizing her health and happiness.
She encouraged women to 'not beg to be loved and respected, seek God's guidance in everything you do and the most important weapon, Prayer.'
