On August 15, 2019, Shanzu resident magistrate David Odhiambo ordered police to charge five suspects, including two Kenyan workers and Ali Punjani's Lebanese third wife Sushmita Karki, within a specified timeframe.

The suspects, who have spent the last two days at the Nyali Police station, were arrested during a raid on Punjani's residence on Tuesday.

Initially, detectives had sought to hold the suspects for a further seven days to complete investigations before charging them.

However, the magistrate ruled that the police must charge the suspects by 4pm on Thursday, giving them a limited timeframe to complete their investigations.
