On Wednesday, Liverpool secured the UEFA Super Cup in a thrilling penalty shootout against Chelsea, winning 5-4 after the game ended 2-2 in extra time.
The match, played in hot and muggy conditions, saw Chelsea take an early lead in the 36th minute when N'Golo Kante's drive from midfield found Christian Pulisic, who turned inside and delivered a perfect through ball for Olivier Giroud to confidently slot home.
However, Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp introduced Brazilian Roberto Firmino at the break, and he had an instant impact, poking the ball past the advancing Kepa Arrizabalaga and Sadio Mane tapped into the unguarded goal to make it 1-1 in the 49th minute.
As the game progressed, both teams created scoring opportunities, with Mason Mount having another Chelsea effort ruled out for offside, leaving the teams level after 90 minutes and forcing extra-time.
It was in the 110th minute that Liverpool struck, with Mane driving home after an excellent exchange with Firmino, but Chelsea were back on level terms just six minutes later with a Jorginho penalty after Tammy Abraham was brought down in the box by Liverpool keeper Adrian.
With the scores level after 120 minutes, the game went into the penalty shootout, where Liverpool's Adrian made a crucial block on Tammy Abraham's effort, securing the win for Juergen Klopp's side.
Chelsea manager Frank Lampard, who took over as manager in July, will be encouraged by a positive display from his team, despite the loss.
“I’ve got nothing but pride in the team and the performance, and confidence in what that means,” said Lampard.
“After Sunday, tonight was another level, and we were unlucky not to win. We’ve got three games now till the international break and we’ll try to win them all,” he added.
