Published on August 15, 2019, HMD Global has announced that older Nokia phones will receive an extra year of security updates.
The update applies to devices announced in the second quarter of 2017, including the Nokia 3, Nokia 5, Nokia 6, and Nokia 8. These phones were initially promised 1 year of system updates and 2 years of security updates.
However, in 2018, HMD extended the system updates program to 2 years, and as a result, these devices are currently running Android 9 Pie.
Security updates are crucial patches sent by Google on a monthly basis, which protect devices from discovered issues and may include minor changes.
On the other hand, Android version updates move devices from one version of Android to another. For example, these Nokia phones launched with Android 7.0 Nougat and have since received Android 8 Oreo and Android 9 Pie.
The Nokia 2 is the only device from this time that will not receive the extra year of security updates, with its last update scheduled for November.
It's worth noting that HMD's approach to software updates has been a key factor in enticing customers to choose their devices over others.
