Published on August 15, 2019, champagne enthusiasts and wine novices alike have long been fascinated by the world of sparkling wine. But have you ever stopped to think about what sets champagne apart from other types of sparkling wine?

It all starts with the region. Champagne can only be called champagne if it originates from the champagne region in northern France. This strict geographical designation is what sets champagne apart from other types of sparkling wine.

But what about the grapes used to make champagne? A blend of three grapes - chardonnay, pinot noir, and pinot meunier - is the traditional combination used to create champagne. If a bottle is labeled 'blanc de blancs,' it means it's made exclusively from chardonnay, while 'blanc de noirs' indicates it's made from pinot noir.

Other types of sparkling wine, such as prosecco and cava, have their own unique characteristics. Prosecco, for example, is made from the prosecco or glera grape and is typically produced using the Charmat method, where the secondary fermentation occurs in a giant tank.

When it comes to the taste, sparkling wine can range from dry to sweet. 'Brut' and 'extra dry' are two common classifications, with 'brut' tasting dry and 'extra dry' tasting slightly sweet.

Whether you're a champagne connoisseur or just starting to explore the world of sparkling wine, there's something for everyone. From the affordable Pierre Moncuit Blanc de Blancs champagne to the luxurious Moet and Chandon Nectar Imperial, there are plenty of options to choose from.
