On August 15, 2019, Deputy President William Ruto took to Twitter to express his frustration over what he termed as 'fake news' reports.
According to Ruto, some Kenyan newspapers were using his name to sell false stories, including a report by The Star that claimed his allies were planning to scuttle the BBI referendum.
“This is what constitutes FAKE NEWS. I know it is difficult but newspapers should try selling without the 'Ruto' mention. Please! Tafadhali woiye!” Ruto said in a tweet.
He also denied a report by The Standard that claimed President Kenyatta had snubbed him at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) two weeks prior.
“FAKE NEWS ALERT!!! I was nowhere near JKIA. I am NOT surprised that some media houses & their owners are this desperate. Tuwasamehe tu!!” Ruto posted on his Twitter account.
